Presentation of the Theotokos - 21st of November

This Feast is celebrated on November the 21st.

According to Church Tradition Mary's parents Joachim and Anna took her to the Temple in Jerusalem as a young girl, where she was presented to the high priest Zacharias, father of St John the Baptist.

She lived there  until  her  betrothal  to St Joseph.

This  feast  marks the replacement of the Temple in Jerusalem as the physical dwelling place of God.

And the Theotokos replaces the Ark of the Covenant and becomes the Ark of the New Covenant, whose womb will carry Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Theotokos is truly the mother of God.

Theotokos usually translated into English as Mother of God literally translates as "God Bearer", meaning she carried God in her womb and that Jesus Christ is indeed God, one of the Holy Trinity.

Celebration of the Feast

During the Divine liturgy the Epistle reading is from Hebrews 9:1-7
1 Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.

2 For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.

3 And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;

4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

5 And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

6 Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.

7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
and the Gospel reading is from Luke
Luke 10:38-42

 38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Luke 11:27-28 27

27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.

28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
Thus do we recall the New Covenant and that the Theotokos is the vessel that carries it.

Today is the preview of the good will of God,
Of the preaching of the salvation of mankind.
The Virgin appears in the temple of God,
In anticipation proclaiming Christ to all. Let us rejoice and sing to her:
Rejoice, 0 Divine Fulfillment of the Creator's dispensation.

 The most pure Temple of the Savior;
The precious Chamber and Virgin;
 The sacred Treasure of the glory of God, Is presented today to the house of the Lord.
She brings with her the grace of the Spirit,
 Therefore, the angels of God praise her: "Truly this woman is the abode of heaven."
