Father Ian Nield (NZ)

The Reverend Father Ian Nield was born in Oldham, England in 1961, and christened in October of that year at St Margaret's Church, Hollinwood, and raised as a High Church Anglican.  In 1970 his family moved to New Zealand, and he commenced study at the University of Waikato in 1980.  As there was no Anglican chaplaincy at the university he sought the pastoral oversight of the Roman Catholic chaplains on campus, Frs Gerald Quin and Graham Alexander.

It was at university that he met Joanne, his future wife, and they were married at St James Anglican Church, Lower Hutt, by Canon Stuart Anderson in 1986.  In 1987, Ian and his wife moved to England to pursue doctoral studies.  Ian was to graduate from his Ph.D in mathematics in 1990, returning to Auckland in 1994 and moving to Lower Hutt in 1998.  In addition to his doctorate in mathematics, he also has qualifications in physics and mathematics.

It was around this time that, sadly, Ian could no longer call the Anglican Church his ecclesial home.  After a period of instruction, his family was received into the Orthodox Church on Palm Sunday, 1999.  In September 2000, Ian was elected to the Archdiocesan Board of Trustees, a position he holds to this day.

Ian was asked several times by Metropolitan Archbishop Paul to accept ordination, to which he finally assented to, being ordained to the priesthood in January 2003 and assigned to head the Orthodox mission in Wellington.  On alternating weeks, Fr Ian serves the Western Rite in Lower Hutt and the Eastern Rite in Wellington, and he also assists V. Rev. Fr Jack Witbrock in the administration of the Deanery of New Zealand.  This is especially noteworthy in light of his full time secular employment as a senior official at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and the fact that his four children are all homeschooled.
